WORKSHOP INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS

This workshop will cover key steps in analyzing 16S bacterial amplicon sequencing data. We will learn how to QC raw data, then use QIIME software to cluster OTUs and make taxonomic assignments.
You will need a wireless enabled laptop with at least 4GB RAM, 20GB of free space and the following installed/downloaded.

The OVA file is large (~3.5GB), so it is imperative that you download and import into virtual box before the workshop.

You can download the virtual box image (.ova file) at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3t10m8wAe95SFBidGhQekZ5ckE/view?usp=sharing

HOW TO IMPORT .OVA INTO VIRTUALBOX

To open the .ova file in virtual box:
1) Open the Virtual Box program
2) Click on File->Import Appliance
3) Find the OVA file you downloaded (click on the small folder icon next to the box) and click continue
4) Leave the appliance settings as default and click import.
5) This will take 5-10 minutes to import the virtual image into virtual box.
6) Once import is complete, select the new VM in the side bar of virtual box and select start to start up the OS. If you ever need a password use:qiime

Note: If you see an error like this " Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found!

Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started. To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND)"
You can either install VirtualBox extensions from this link - VirtualBox Extensions All supported platforms
or do the following
  • Select the virtual machine in the side bar
  • Right-click the virtual machine -> settings -> Ports -> USB and uncheck the Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller option.
  • Start up the virtual machine and it should work.
